This poem is dedicated to my father, who passed away many years ago. My memories of him are few. However, I remember feeling supported and loved whenever we were together. My father was ambitious. He wanted the best for himself and his children. His dreams were cut short by death, but my love for him wasn’t... Until we meet again Dad. I hope you’re smiling.

Dear Dot, Dot, Dot. 

I haven’t spoken to you in a while.
Damn; near since I was a child.  
How you been?
I’ve been thinking a lot about you lately. 
The memories of you,
Someone I hardly even knew; somehow grew!
Causing my heart to grow fond of you; greatly! 

They say that memories don’t die.  
God knows, I know that’s not a lie… 
Cause I cry...
When I reminisce of how you made me feel. 
You left and went away.
Persuasion could not cause you to stay…
Anyway… 
God took you back, yeah that’s a fact
and that’s what’s real.  

Oh, and mom is up there too.
She left a few years after you. 
Dot…
You know that was a hard pill for me to swallow. 
But I learned to move on…
Had to accept that she was gone. 
I do my best;
Although she’s a hard act to follow. 

Dot; I mean… she brought me into this world.
And ever since I was a girl,
I Loved Her.
How do you move on from that?
She taught me how to live,
Persevere;
Gave me love that no one else could give; so impressive!
That woman always had my back.

Yeah, I inherited some stuff from you.
Don’t act as if you never knew…
I got your attitude, perception and your wit…
And that dream you had to achieve that goal.
Half of That story wasn’t told.
Don’t worry, I remember;
and I’ll go ahead and pursue it.

Well, it’s time for me to go.
But here’s something you might not know. 
I Love You.
You did your best with what you had.  
The separation has been long.  
Writing this makes me realize,
I’ve been wrong!
How dare I call you Dot?
Damn!
I miss you Dad.
